Tips on Home Vegetable Gardening

posted by on July 09th, 2011

Today it is easy to plant your own small herbs and vegetable garden as you have most or all the information you need on the seed packages; for planting, watering, germination time and even instructions on how to look after the seedlings. Most seedlings are ready to be planted after 4-5 weeks. Moreover, it is very important too keep the young seedlings well watered but without over-watering. If the soil is not well drained you need to take extra care and water your plants in the morning when the weather is cooler because if you water them in the evening it will lead to diseases; likewise in the summer it would be better to water the plants in the evening.

Small garden designs are suitable for all types of yards no matter the size. You can still make your own raised bed gardening even though you have a small space for it. Home vegetable gardening will allow you to permanently have at your disposal the fresh vegetables and herbs you like to eat. People tend to believe that most herbs are annuals, when actually many are biennials or perennials. So, a good small garden design will help you have permanent herbs and even grow a few more herbs as annuals if you want. On the other hand, you can opt for growing your vegetables and herbs in pots and you can have your own moving garden that you can easily transport from a place to another if need be. Still, growing in containers means that some plants have to be dug and divided after one or two years in order not to become root-bound.

Basil, oregano, lemongrass, chives, thyme and sage are amongst the most popular herbs that you can plant.

It is vital to know that seeds don’t need sunlight to germinate, just moisture and warmth. But, after germinating, they need sunlight or equivalent, in order to grow healthily. For good germination in cool weather it helps using a small green house or an improvised one, but they can also germinate inside the house in a warm place, such as the kitchen. In addition, before sowing you should ensure that the mixture is well soaked and after that you need only provide a very light watering till they germinate. Make sure that the mixture doesn’t dry out and keep it moist until the start of the germination. For watering, you can use a fine nozzle head in a watering can or a rose sprinkler that will help you avoid flooding the seeds. The newly sown seeds or very young seedlings can be protected from water drop impact by sprinkling fine sand on top of them before sowing.

Furthermore, transplanting should take place before the seedlings get too old or too large. It is vital for the healthy growth of your plants to use a high quality soil or mixture that contains enough nutrients. If you can’t find such soil, you can opt for adding liquid fertilizer once every 2 weeks. For young tender seedlings, it is safer to use ½ strength. Finally, before transplanting, the seedlings need to be hardened off by moving them to a place where they have great sun exposure, and ease off on the watering. Consequently, they will be toughened up and won’t suffer any setbacks during the transplanting into your small garden space.

All this great information is extracted from a series of books by Master Gardener John Bee on How to Grow Herbs and Veggies in Small-spaces.

It is not always possible for someone to build a wood shed for added storage, especially when the need is for a short period of time. There is a wide selection in the market that you can choose from in meeting the desired needs using a shed kit. However, it is important to understand that not all sheds are reliable for ones use. A few considerations when planning for your new storage building can save you a significant amount of time.

There are basically four aspects that have to be considered when choosing the sheds:-
1. Color
2. Design
3. Size
4. Material

Color
When choosing reliable sheds, it is important to look at the color of the material used. Different sheds incorporate different colors. The right color has to lie within your preferences and should be able to lighten up ones mood. In addition to that, the color should be able to blend in well with the environment and augment the overall ambience of the home compound.

Design
Most people tend to mistake color for design. These are two completely different aspects that depict different things. The design of the shed is how it appears on the outside in terms of modeling and the patterns incorporated in it. It is imperative to take time to consider the design of the target sheds before making any purchase. The sheds should be appealing to the eye and able to offer reliable features that will create more room for accommodation. A reliable design also has the ability to make it easy for maintenance especially when it comes to cleaning and arranging. All in all, it is imperative to ensure that the design chosen does not affect the size in any way. You can choose designs from the standard front entry, side entry and even double door sheds. The roof can be peaked, gambrel or barn styled. You’ll want to make sure your building is sturdy so make sure you choose something with steel reinforcements in the walls. (Lifetime and Suncast sheds offer solutions like this.)

Size
The size of your new storage shed should also be looked at when looking for a reliable shed kit to purchase and install. People use the sheds for a number of reasons. In most cases, the sheds are used for extra storage space in your backyard. This means that one has to consider the accommodation requirements when choosing the right shed to use; how much space do you need? It should be of a considerable size to accommodate all the desired lawn mowers, tools or equipment without any problem. The sizes range from small to medium to large and then to the extra-large storage sheds and utility buildings.

Material
Finally, the material used in the construction of the storage sheds has to be considered. The sheds can either be made of vinyl, plastic, resin, metal or wood. The choice of material is influenced by the needs of the user. When it comes to quality, we recommend purchasing a plastic or resin storage shed with steel reinforced columns and trusses. A premium quality shed made of high density polyethylene plastic (HDPE) or resin material with steel reinforcements with give your building the strength to stand the test of time. Materials like plastic and resin are resistant from rust, corrosion, fading, splintering, etc. and hold up against the elements much better than the metal and wood choices. For the best overall results we recommend plastic units from Lifetime Sheds and resin buildings from Suncast Sheds.
